An Overview of Butterfly Valves and Their Multiple Applications

In order to supply water to large or even limited areas, a component must be able to control the flow and maintain it. Water could be wasted if the pace increases, resulting in overflow. One of the segments of the piping system that helps resolve this issue is butterfly valves.

Water supply systems have been part of civilization since the early ages when water was usually supplied by canals to homes. Most people had to physically draw water from wells since they were a constant source of water. With the installation of modern plumbing solutions and pumps to supply water, technology has simplified the process over time. There are intricate networks in these pipes and they are fitted so that they don’t burden the main source.

Defining Butterfly Valve and a Brief Overview

Through the rotation of a disc, butterfly valves control the internal flow of substances within pipes.  Due to its way of functioning, the valve is referred to as a butterfly valve. The rod represents the body of the butterfly, while the disk on top resembles the wings by moving up and down right-angled. In most cases, the disc has placed either parallel or perpendicular to the flow of material. The ability of this valve to shift pressure within is different from that of the others. The object is used primarily in pumping stations and is also more compact, which simplifies installation.

The butterfly consists of four primary components: the body, the disk, the stem, and the seat. In the body, two pipes can be connected using lugs or wafers to form the valve disk. Here the flow of material is restrained, and this section usually requires constant upgrades to enhance the flow and torque of the valve. There is also a stem with a one- or two-piece shaft design, and the final section is the valve seat, where the supply can be turned off. As a result of the disk’s edge and the site interfering with the flow, the material stops.

Application Areas and Variations of Butterfly Valve

The plumbing and piping segment has a variety of valves to make water and other substances easier to supply. In addition to the butterfly valves, there are also sub-divisions that are made to accommodate other elements that may require these valves. There are three different types of valves – plastic lines, rubber lines, and metal lines.

  • Metal ones are used primarily in high-pressure or high-temperature situations.
  • Rubber lines are more economical and don’t tarnish easily. Generally, they are most effective at lower temperatures.
  • Due to their resistive properties, plastic line valves are extensively used in sanitary applications and for supplying harsh chemicals.

Various Utilizations of Butterfly Valves

The convenience factor as well as the ability to control low have led to the application of butterfly valves in many industries. Here are a few of the more prominent ones:

  • Water Supply
  • Treatment of Wastewater
  • Vacuum Service
  • Chemical and Oil Industries
  • Provision of Compresses Gas and Air
  • Power Generation
  • Food Processing
  • Lubrication System
