1. Startup problems

Start your Mac, then press and hold the Shift key to boot into safe mode. The login screen will first show, followed by the Apple logo. Once the Apple logo has vanished and the login screen has appeared, you can release the Shift key. Before you see the login screen, macOS may run some diagnostics on your hard drive, which could take a while. Simply restart your Mac while holding no keys to exit Safe Mode and start it up normally.

2. Incompatible login items

When you start your Mac, if you find yourself staring at a blue screen, it may be because one of your starting items—apps that launch automatically—is incompatible with macOS. You can figure out which app is the problematic one with a little amount of trial and error.

You can check to see if the issue is resolved by removing login items one at a time and restarting your Mac after each removal. To do this, navigate to System Preferences > Users and Groups and select Current User from the left-hand menu. Then select the Login Items tab from the window’s top right corner. 

After selecting an app, click the minus sign (-) below. You can restart your Mac to check if your startup problem has been resolved after it has been removed from the list of Login Items. If not, you can go back to the list, remove another program, and repeat the process until you identify the offending application. By clicking the “+” button and choosing items, you can add things back to the Startup Items list.

3. Unresponsive app

On rare occasions, an app could cause your Mac to freeze. Additionally, when an app hangs, it locks you out and prevents you from exiting the program. Enter “Force Quit”. 

By pressing Command-Option-Escape or the Apple icon in the top-left corner, you can access the Force Quit menu. Simply choose the unresponsive app and use the Force Quit button. To force-quit several apps, hold down the Command or Shift keys while making your selections.

4. Spinning beach ball

If you are seeing the spinning beach ball with increasing regularity, then it’s time to take a look at what might be causing the slowdown. To check how big of an impact the apps you are presently running are having on your system resources, open the Activity Monitor (by searching for it or finding it in the Utility folder, which is inside your Applications folder).

You can get current statistics on the percentage of CPU and memory resources each app is using in the Activity Monitor pane. You can also close any program that is using an excessive amount of resources by using the Activity Monitor. Simply select an application from the list, click the X in the upper-left corner, and then choose Quit or Force Quit.

5. No Internet connection

When my MacBook’s Wi-Fi status indicates No Internet Connection, the simplest resolution is to forget the network and then reconnect as if it were brand-new.

To forget your Wi-Fi network, select it, press the “-” icon, and then click Remove. You can click the Wi-Fi symbol in the menu bar to reconnect to your network after it has been deleted and forgotten by inputting your password and beginning over.
