How Does a Plug Valve Work?

The plug valve consists of a plug with a hollow passage in the valve body. By quarter-turning the pipe, the alignment between the pipe and the hole is create, resulting in the hole being open. From an open position, the valve sits across the pipe when turned 90 degrees.

The plug valve comes in a variety of styles and port openings.

  • Two-Way Plug Valves: The design features a plug and sleeve closure element, as well as a two-way service for the open and close functions.
  • Three-Way Plug Valves: These valves include a third port that sits at a right angle to the inlet. Diverting flow (entering from one inlet into both outlets) or combining flow (entering from two inlets into one outlet) can accomplish with these plug valves.

What is a Plug Valve Used for?

What are the Different Types of Plug Valves?

  • Lubricated Plug Valves: In dirty upstream applications, cast iron lubricated plug valves handle corrosive or abrasive materials without clogging. To maintain their effectiveness, these plugs need to receive frequently.
  • Non-Lubricated Plug Valves: Plug valves without lubrication are used in settings that prioritize low-maintenance procedures. They can sleeve with elastomer, life, or fully lined.
  • Expandable Plug Valves: There are multiple components in these valves, and the rotation motion prevents wear or abrasion of seals. In applications that don’t require double isolation, they are a good fit for preventing product contamination.
  • Eccentric Plug Valves: In isolation or flow control systems, eccentric plug valves find their place in applications where a high seating force is needed and minimal friction is required from open to closed positions. Among these are sewage, sludge, slurries, air, and other services.

Advantages and Disadvantages

In addition to being compact and taking up less space, plug valves have the following advantages as well:

  • Flow Regulation – Quick shut-off, low-pressure drop, and tight shut-off.
  • Fire-safety and Durability – The plug and body seating surfaces are not expose to the line fluid, reducing corrosion and erosion.
  • Versatility – Plug valves can handle high flow rates as well.

A few disadvantages of plug valves are:

  • Throttling applications are not suitable for them.
  • Due to their high friction, they require a greater amount of force for actuation.
  • There is a possibility of galling with them.
  • There is a reduction in port size due to the tapered plug design.
